The referral journey

What happens after a referral?

A collaborative process centred on diagnosis, informed decisions and continuity of care.

Where appropriate and consented, microscope-assisted primary treatment or nonsurgical retreatment is carried out.

04 / HANDOVER

Return to your dentist

Findings and treatment information are communicated to support definitive restoration and continuing care.

Case selection

When to consider a referral

PRIMARY TREATMENT

Complex root canal anatomy

Cases requiring enhanced visualisation, assessment or management of challenging canal anatomy.

RETREATMENT

Previously treated teeth

Persistent or recurrent disease where nonsurgical retreatment may be appropriate.

DIAGNOSTICS

Uncertain diagnosis

Complex symptoms, uncertain pulpal or periapical findings, or questions about prognosis.

Acceptance and treatment decisions depend on individual assessment, restorability and available facilities.

Questions from dentists

Frequently asked questions

Will my patient return to me?

The intention is to provide the agreed endodontic care and communicate findings so the patient can continue ongoing dental care with their referring dentist. The exact plan is discussed case by case.

Who places the definitive restoration?

The definitive restorative plan should be agreed in advance. Endodontic treatment fees do not automatically include a crown or other definitive restoration.

What if the tooth is not restorable?

Assessment may identify limited prognosis or restorability. Findings and options are explained before treatment proceeds.

Which radiographs should I provide?

Relevant, recent diagnostic radiographs and any existing imaging that helps explain the case. Additional imaging is based on clinical indication.

Can I refer an urgent case through the website?

No. The online referral form is not active. For urgent dental problems, telephone the practice or use appropriate urgent dental services.

Is Dr Almallah a registered endodontic specialist?

No. Dr Almallah is a GDC-registered dentist with a special interest in endodontics, undertaking further postgraduate training.

Referrals

All endodontic cases welcome.

We welcome referrals for straightforward primary root canal treatment, complex anatomy, calcified canals, nonsurgical retreatment, persistent symptoms and diagnostic assessment.

Post-endodontic restoration

Following root canal treatment, the choice of temporary or definitive restoration will be determined by the clinical circumstances, remaining tooth structure and the referring dentist’s preferences. Where appropriate, a definitive core restoration may be provided. Patients return to their referring dentist for ongoing care, with recommendations for definitive restoration and cuspal coverage where indicated.

Referral scope

We welcome referrals for non-surgical endodontic assessment, primary root canal treatment and retreatment, from straightforward to complex cases.

Outside our current scope: surgical endodontics (including apicectomy) and dental trauma cases. Please direct these to an appropriately equipped service.

Each referral is assessed individually. Following treatment, the referring dentist receives a clinical summary and restorative recommendations. Temporary or definitive restoration is planned case by case, taking account of the tooth, clinical circumstances and referring dentist’s preferences.
